From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm interested in Veillot's taxonomy of raptors, but unfortunately haven't found any English translation of his Analyse d'une nouvelle ornithologie élémentaire. (Would this translate as "Analysis of a new elementary ornithology"?)

He appears to have coined many genus names.

The Smithsonian Libraries have digitized an 1883 edition of the 1816 book: this version is available via Internet Archive vieillotsanalyse00viei, Biodiversity Library vieillotsanalyse00viei DOI and Open Library OL23356508M.

Veillot, Louis Pierre (1816). Saunders, Howard (ed.). Analyse d'une nouvelle ornithologie élémentaire (in French) (London 1883 ed.). Willughby Society.

He starts with raptors as the first order on page 21: http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/46097#page/21/, giving the taxon names in French and Latin. I have italicized the Latin but not the French, as in the original.

The constituent species are listed in either French or Latin, depending on the original authority; I have attempted English translations for some, and omitted some that don't add extra information (e.g. genus pygargue, species pygargue). Note that Veillot has many genera, with few species in each. Compare this to Turton (1800), who has many more species listed in total.

Greek glossary

[edit]

An appendix gives Latin glosses for Greek-based names. http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/46097#page/87/

Due to keyboard limitations, I have transliterated the Greek into Roman script, using ’ and ‘ for breathing accents; with í ò etc. for the other accents. O-mega is ō (I was tempted to use 'w', but it looked wrong); unaccented is o-micron. Theta and psi are th (katharizo) and ps (gyps). Zeta is 'z' rather than 'ts'; upsilon/ypsilon is 'y' rather than 'u'; eta/heta is 'h' (’ibykth`r could equally have been written ’ibuktÈr).

  • Ægolii (a’igōlios, ulula) – howl, hoot?, screech? (as in screech-owl)
  • Catharista (katharizō, purifico) – purify, cleanse, purge
  • Circaetus (kírkos, circus, ’áetos, aquila) – circling eagle
  • Daptrius (dáptrios, vorator) – devourer
  • Gypagus (gỳps, vultur, ’agòs, dux) – leading or commanding vulture
  • Ibycter (’ibykth`r, vociferator) – loud, shouting
  • Spizaëtus (spizía, accipiter, ’aetòs, aquila ) – hawk eagle
