Bio
[edit]About Me
[edit]I’m a voracious reader of almost all genres, but nonfiction has been capturing my attention the most lately. It may be possible that reading will help preserve your cognitive abilities as you age. [1] When I’m not reading, I’m either staring at my cat or playing Skyrim. Other interests of mine are music (particularly Elliott Smith, Grouper, and Lana Del Rey), medieval times, and psychology.
My Wikipedia Interests
[edit]I’ve had a passion for Greek mythology and ancient Greek history since I read Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series as a kid, and I have had plenty of time to comb through books and pursue information about it. Another interest of mine is social justice and I know a lot about different political concepts, historical revolutions, and prominent figures involved. My guilty pleasure is celebrity drama and pop culture, so I’m sure I’ll be useful in correcting information regarding that too.
Article Evaluation
[edit]While trying to think of a niche interest of mine that would be useful for this assignment, I realized that I was listening to Kimya Dawson: a relatively underground singer who I’ve followed since I was in middle school. I visited the Kimya Dawson article on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: lack of organization, poor citations, and missing information.
Lack of Organization
[edit]The entire article has random facts scattered around in a disorderly fashion. There’s a section about what movie soundtracks she’s been a part of, and at the end, it begins to get derailed. There’s quotes from critics about her work that feel very out of place, and irrelevant to what films and shows she’s recorded music for. The personal life section doesn’t follow a clear structure, and starts out by talking about a random anecdote she posted about on a blog. After that, more sporadic information is presented: there’s another anecdote about a rumor she started, and the sentence after that talks about her gender identity. These have nothing to do with each other, and should not be connected.
Poor Citations
[edit]The citations are often missing, or lack quality. There’s a link to her ex-husbands wikipedia page, but the link doesn’t function at all. There’s a citation needed on a sentence about her winning a grammy for her work on the Juno soundtrack. This happens multiple times throughout the article. The most recent citation is from 2013, which means a lot of the information is not up to date. There’s also many words, bands, venues, and movies mentioned that should have an internal link, but don’t.
Missing Information
[edit]This wikipedia article has a lot of missing information. In the soundtrack section, it doesn’t mention her recent work for HBO’s The Runaway Bunny. She also appeared on an album based on Harry Potter that isn’t mentioned anywhere. There’s no mention of the Daniel Johnston cover album she played a song for, either. Her personal life section talks about her marriage to her husband, but does not say anything about how they are divorced now. The paragraph about where she has lived is pretty bare; there’s a very long description of all the times she has moved on her Spotify biography, but here, there’s just two sentences.
Conclusion
[edit]When people go onto an artist’s wikipedia page, it’s usually because they want to learn more about them. Kimya Dawson’s article is not very organized, has poor citations, and does not contain a lot of crucial information about her. Overall, I think the article's quality is substandard.
