Review

[edit]

Pre-season

[edit]

Hereford entered pre-season bolstered by manager Paul Caddis signing a one-year contract extension after guiding the club to their highest ever league finish last season.

On 9 May, both Kyle Howkins and Jason Cowley committed to the club for the season. On 28 May, Hereford announced their first close season signing, winger Chay Tilt joining from Sporting Khalsa.

August

[edit]

The month began with the news of former Birmingham City youngster Tate Campbell joining the club. On the field, Hereford opened the season on 10 August at home to South Shields, where debutant Montel Gibson, veteran forward Andy Williams and Yusifu Ceesay all scored in a 3–0 win. A potentially difficult away trip to Chorley followed a week later, substitute debutant Ahkeem Rose equalising late on to secure a hard-earned 1–1 draw. Hereford then hosted Peterborough Sports in their first Tuesday night fixture, taking a first half lead through Gibson before Dion Sembie-Ferris equalised midway through the second half to restrict Hereford to a point and a second consecutive 1–1 draw. A trip to Haig Avenue followed four days later with the Bulls producing a clinical second half performance to beat Southport 4–1, Alex Babos coming off the bench to score twice. Just two days later and newly-promoted Radcliffe visited Edgar Street on August Bank Holiday. The away side found themselves 2–0 up inside 15 minutes before Hereford pegged them back at 2–2 in first half stoppage time. Radcliffe took the lead once more in the 58th minute, before Tate Campbell scored his first goal for the club to equalise, heading home a Babos corner with five minutes remaining. The final fixture of the month came away at serial play-off contenders Brackley Town, Campbell once more the hero by scoring a 94th minute winner after Babos had put Hereford 1–0 up in the first half, Brackley equalising before half-time.

Hereford finished the month unbeaten, sitting in 3rd place after their first six fixtures.

September

[edit]

Hereford's unbeaten start to the season came to a halt immediately in September with a 1–0 home defeat against newly promoted Needham Market. In their three league games throughout the month, they failed to win and also failed to score. Two 0–0 draws followed the Needham Market defeat, firstly away against Spennymoor Town, then at home against King's Lynn Town.

The club's FA Cup campaign also began and finished during the month. They drew lower-graded Ilkeston Town in the second qualifying round, drawing 1–1 thanks to a second-half Yusifu Ceesay equaliser. In the replay the following Tuesday, Adam Rooney scored the solitary goal to win 1–0 and set up a third qualifying round tie against another lower-graded opponent in Bishop's Stortford. Hereford were subsequently knocked out by Stortford, losing 3–2.

Hereford ended the month in 8th, one place outside the play-offs. Midfielder Tate Campbell picked up a player and goal of the month double for August. The club also lost striker Montel Gibson, who joined step 3 club Matlock Town for an undisclosed fee.

October

[edit]

Defender Sammy Robinson won September's player of the month vote, whilst Yusifu Ceesay was awarded goal of the month for his strike in the 3–2 defeat to Bishop's Stortford.

Hereford only played once at home throughout the month, but picked up three wins, a draw and a second defeat of the season. They began the month with a respectable 0–0 draw away against Alfreton Town, before recording back-to-back 2–1 away wins against Buxton and Curzon Ashton respectively. They fell to their first away defeat of the season mid-week against Warrington Town, losing 2–0, before returning to Edgar Street for the first time since 21 September, and recorded a 3–0 win against Farsley Celtic.

Early in the month Hereford brought in Ty Deacon from Tamworth on a short-term deal to bolster their forward line, whilst defender Ryan Bartley joined on a one-month loan from Derby County U21. The club finished the month in 5th with 24 points.

November

[edit]

Loan defender Ryan Bartley won October's player of the month award for his performances at right-back. Yusifu Ceesay won a consecutive goal of the month for his headed second goal in the 3–0 home win against Farsley Celtic.
