Charlotte Frimpong, known as C.FRIM, is an Australian DJ, founder, and organizer. She is known for energizing, genre-bending sets that feature syncopated rhythms, hard-drum and unpredictable curveballs. In addition to DJ-ing worldwide, they are known for co-founding the label DUTTY WORLDWIDE (stylized in all-caps) with Mirasia, a Melbourne-based event series for QTPOC, showcasing the talents of DJs like HALFQUEEN, Sherelle, Soju Gang, Lady Shaka, Byrell The Great, Bambii and Brown Suga Princess.

Early Life

[edit]

Frimpong grew up in the suburbs of Melbourne. She also grew up skating in Melbourne, where she joined an all-girls skate group called DNL, filming skate videos at well-known spots like the Carlton IMAX and Flemington Bridge. Though Frimpong, who has Filipino and Ghanian heritage, didn’t grow up in a musical household, she was first drawn by the jerk and Dougie movement as a teen, ripping songs directly from YouTube and burning them onto CDs. She later became interested in progressive sounds like gqom, hard drum, dancehall, jungle, rap, and a myriad of other genres. [1]

Her first point of contact with dance and electronic music was around the age of 15 and 16, when she attended a series of raves with her friends in the abandoned warehouses of Footscray, Melbourne. She became fascinated by watching DJs perform front row. C.FRIM took up DJ-ing around 2017 when she was introduced to production and DJing by her group of high school friends and began learning on the fly. She refined her skills by practicing at home with the help of YouTube tutorials before playing local house parties and soon after booking sets for radio stations, club nights and festivals — first in Australia then across the world. [2]

Career

[edit]

Shortly after her breakthrough performance at Golden Plains Festival alongside supporting acts Junglepussy and Venus X, C.FRIM's began a collaboration with Mirasia, co-founding DUTTY WORLDWIDE. This event began as a three-person gig at Melbourne's Rooftop Bar. Over time, it blossomed into a vibrant platform for QTPOC showcasing DJs like HALFQUEEN, Sherelle, Soju Gang, Lady Shaka, Byrell The Great, Bambii, and Brown Suga Princess. The spirit of this event series carries over to AFROFUTURE, a show hosted at Sydney Opera House for VIVID Festival. [3] This event featured C.FRIM alongside other influential DJs like Sampa the Great, Mwanje, and KYE, all influential artists in the Australian music scene.

Inspired by the African and Asian diaspora, C.FRIM blends rhythmic influences from her roots in her 2021 BUTTER SESSIONS mix. She has collaborated with influential jungle DJ and artist Nia Archives. As of 2023 they have toured across Asia, UK & Europe playing at notable venues such as HÖR, AppleMusic, Resident Advisor, Potato Head Bali, and Boiler Room among others. In fashion, they have collaborated with brands such as JUDAH and Heron. [4]
