The arson of the Athens branch store of Marfin bank, also known in Greece as the tragedy of Marfin, took place on 5 May 2010 during protests against the financial measures for the signing of the loan agreement. A group of unknown individuals, believed to be anarchists, threw Molotov cocktails at the bank while about 25-30 workers were inside. Most managed to escape, five people were rescued by the fire brigade and three people died of suffocation due to toxic fumes and thick smoke. The identities of the perpetrators of the attack have not been confirmed. In 2013, bank executives were convicted of negligent murder of three employees, bodily harm of 21 other employees and multiple omissions in fire safety measures and staff training.
