History
[edit]In 1888, with the approval of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, American missionaries founded an ecumenical Christian university in Guangzhou known as "Hackett College." In 1926, the institution was renamed "Lingnan University" as a private institution. In 1952, during the restructuring of Chinese higher education institutions, Lingnan University ceased to exist as a private university, and its major departments were incorporated into Sun Yat-sen University. Soon after, Sun Yat-sen University relocated from its original campus in Shipai, Tianhe District, to the former Lingnan University campus in Haizhu District.
In 1988, on the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the former Lingnan University, Lingnan (University) College of Sun Yat-sen University was established with the approval of the National Education Commission of the People's Republic of China, becoming an affiliated department of Sun Yat-sen University. The College was renamed to Lingnan College in 2022.
