In late August and early September 1999, an outbreak of West Nile virus affected a portion of northern Queens and the surrounding areas. It was the first known appearance of West Nile virus in the Western Hemisphere. The outbreak's causal agent was originally misidentified by health authorities as St. Louis encephalitis virus, a closely-related member of the genus Flavivirus.
