Perumpallikunnel Family (Poonjar Branch)

The name "Perumpallikunnel" is associated with multiple regions across Kerala. However, there is no conclusive evidence that these families share a common origin or form branches of a single ancestral lineage. This article focuses on the Perumpallikunnel family located in Poonjar, detailing their history as recorded in the family’s published history (1996).

Origins and Early Settlement

The Perumpallikunnel family's known migration begins from Kuravilangad, an ancient settlement of Marthoma Nazrani Christians, or from a nearby location. The family eventually spread to various regions, including Mannakkanadu, Kizhathadiyoor, and Moonnani.

The Poonjar branch of the family emerged when Chandy, a great-grandfather, married a woman from the Inchakad family (Moozhiyankal) in Poonjar. Following this marriage, Chandy settled in Poonjar on a property he purchased from the Poriyathu Illam, located in Kavumkadavu, near the Poonjar Mankombumkavu Temple, across the Meenachil River (Kavanar). This migration is believed to have occurred during the latter half of the 18th century.

Expansion of the Family

• As the Perumpallikunnel family grew in numbers, its members began moving to nearby regions, creating several branches. Initially, one branch relocated to Kizhakkethottam. In subsequent years, family members moved to various other areas, forming sub-branches with distinct house names, (such as: Chollananiyil, Kodithottam, Puthuparampil, Valickapathal, Puthenveettil, Vayalil, Kunnethottam, Pannimuthanal) Additionally, the Perumpallikunnel family further expanded to Kattarath (with sub-branches like Muthirenthickal, Vadakkath, Padikara, and Olikal), Pulickal (sub-branches such as Kochupura, Charath, Mattathinanickal, Puthenpura, and Mukalel), and Perumpallikkunnel (with sub-branches including Poovathinkal, Attupuram, Parakonel, and Makkenkara).

By the mid-20th century, most sub-branches began adopting the names of the main branches in official records, except for Muthirenthickal. The major branches of the Perumpallikunnel family in Poonjar today are:

Kizhakkethottam

Kattarath (including the Muthirenthickal sub-branch)

Pulickal

Perumpallikkunnel

Religious Contributions and the Founding of Maniamkunnu Church

The family has historically been connected to St. Mary’s Parish Church, Poonjar, established by the Inchakkadan family. One of the most notable family members was Rev. Fr. Varkey Kattarath, the son of Chandy and Thresia, who served as a priest in the Changanacherry Roman Catholic Diocese. He was the founder of the Vincentian Congregation for priests at Thottakam.

His younger brother, Kochu Chandy, the fourth and youngest son, also joined the priesthood. After completing his studies at seminaries in Thrissur and Pallippuram, Fr. Kochu Chandy was ordained by H.E. Charles Levinge, Bishop of the Changanacherry Diocese. He was initially appointed as an assistant to Jacob Kathanar Thelliyil, the Vicar of Poonjar Parish. However, tensions arose, and the vicar prohibited Fr. Kochu Chandy from staying in the parish house, forcing him to live in a deer shed in the compound.

Disheartened, Fr. Kochu Chandy prayed to St. Mary, the family’s patron saint, for guidance. He felt a divine call to build a church on Maniamkunnu hilltop (meaning "beautiful mount"). Seeking the family’s support, he explained his situation and asked the elders to meet with Bishop Levinge to request permission for constructing a church and priest's residence on Maniamkunnu. The family agreed and successfully obtained the Bishop’s approval, citing the difficulties of crossing the river during most of the year.

Thus, the Sacred Heart Church and a priest’s residence were built on Maniamkunnu between 1891 and 1896. From 1891, the Holy Qurbana began to be celebrated in this church. Fr. Chandy Kattarath served as the vicar and spiritual guide of the church, which initially had only 37 houses. He continued in this role until his death in 1927, and his mortal remains were laid to rest inside the church.

An agreement was made before Fr. Chandy’s death between the vicar, parish elders, and the Changanacherry Diocese, ensuring that priests would regularly be appointed to serve the spiritual needs of the parishioners at Maniamkunnu.
