Darul Uloom Deoband Ki Jame O Mukhtasar Tareekh
Arabic magazine
[edit]In 1384 AH / 1965 CE, the quarterly Arabic magazine Dawhat-ul-Haq was published, which was edited by Hazrat Maulana Waheed-uz-Zaman Kiranwi. This magazine was continuously published for ten years. In 1395 AH, corresponding to 1975 CE, its publication was discontinued. Another Arabic magazine *Al-Kifah*, under the editorship of Maulana Waheed-uz-Zaman Kiranwi, was also published as the spokesperson of the All India Ulama's Association. In 1396 AH, corresponding to 1976 CE, Darul Uloom Deoband launched a bi-monthly Arabic magazine under the name *Al-Da'i*. The editorship of *Al-Da'i* remained with Maulana Waheed-uz-Zaman Kiranwi for a while, and then Maulana Badrul Hasan Qasmi was appointed as its editor. From 1403 AH, corresponding to 1982 CE, this magazine has been published under the editorship of Maulana Noor Alam Khalil Amini. *Al-Da'i* began to be published monthly from 1414 AH, corresponding to 1993 CE.(398)
- Al-Da'i* is considered a standard Arabic magazine. In terms of both outward and inward qualities, it holds a distinguished position among Arabic magazines and journals in India. The selection of topics, the elegance and refinement of language and expression, as well as special attention given to the outward beauty and decoration of *Al-Da'i*, are notable. The magazine’s special writings and insightful editorials on current affairs, especially the issues and difficulties faced by the Islamic world and the Arab world, as well as the political and cultural situations, are read with great attention and viewed with admiration. The representation of the true ideology of Darul Uloom and the dissemination of the knowledge and teachings of its prominent scholars are given special importance. The magazine’s quality is high from every aspect, and Alhamdulillah, this representative of Darul Uloom is highly regarded and respected even in Arab countries.
In 1404 AH, under the direction of its first director, Hazrat Maulana Saeed Ahmad Akbar Abadi, the *Islamic Studies* research quarterly *Al-Dirasat al-Islamiyyah* began publication by Sheikh-ul-Hind Academy, though only two issues were published. Recently (in 1441 AH), under the editorial leadership of Maulana Muhammad Sajid Qasmi, *Al-Nahda Al-Adabiyyah* has started as a quarterly journal.
Darul Uloom Deoband and the institutions established on its model have also played an extremely important role in serving the Arabic language in India. The schools established in the subcontinent and other parts of the world based on Darul Uloom’s model all have Arabic as their central language. The subjects of Quran and Hadith, Fiqh, and Islamic sciences taught in these schools cannot be understood without proficiency in the Arabic language. This is why graduates of these schools, upon obtaining a degree in religious sciences, also possess a certain level of proficiency in Arabic, and a large number of them have a considerable command of the Arabic language.
Despite being of Indian origin, the scholars of Deoband have performed significant authorial and compilation work in the Arabic language. The history of Darul Uloom stands witness to the fact that since its establishment, there has not been a period in which the Arabic contributions of the scholars of Darul Uloom have ceased; examples of Arabic services of various kinds can be found in every era. Scholars of Deoband have written works in Arabic on every subject, whether it be Tafsir, Hadith, logic, philosophy, history, or literature. In short, the scholars of Deoband have produced standard works on every topic in Arabic. Below is a list of such books.(399)
Urdu magazine
[edit]The history of Darul Uloom and Urdu journalism is very old. In view of the importance of media and journalism, Hazrat Maulana Habib-ur-Rahman Usmani launched the monthly *Al-Qasim* in 1328 AH / 1910 CE, which was later affiliated with Darul Uloom in 1331 AH. The contributors to this magazine included Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi, Hazrat Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani, Maulana Azaz Ali Amrohvi, Maulana Qari Mohammad Tayyib, Maulana Mufti Mohammad Shafi Deobandi, Maulana Abdul Hafeez Darbhangwi, and others among the youth. Then, in 1332 AH / 1914 CE, the monthly *Al-Rashid* was launched in memory of Hazrat Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi. Hazrat Maulana Syed Miya Asghar Hussain Deobandi, Maulana Syed Siraj Ahmad Rashidi, and Maulana Manazir Ahsan Geylani were responsible for editing these magazines. These scholars, especially the latter, Maulana Geylani, began writing for these journals and wrote extensively. Both magazines continued until 1339 AH and were then discontinued. *Al-Qasim* was re-launched in 1344 AH under the patronage of Hazrat Maulana Habib-ur-Rahman Usmani, but it ceased publication by 1347 AH. During its second phase, the responsibility of editing it was entrusted to Maulana Mohammad Tahir Qasmi.
In 1360 AH / 1941 CE, a monthly Urdu magazine named *Darul Uloom* was launched, which is still being published today. The first editor of this magazine was Maulana Abdul Waheed Ghazipuri (the editor and founder of *Nayi Duniya* Delhi), followed by Qazi Khaleeq Ahmad Siddiqui Sardhani and Maulana Abdul Hafeez Bilyavi, who were appointed editors. In 1368 AH / 1949 CE, the editorship of this magazine was handed over to Maulana Ibn-al-Anwar Maulana Azhar Shah Qaiser, who successfully managed the magazine for almost ten years. Afterward, Maulana Riyasat Ali Bijnori served as the editor for a while. Later, Maulana Habib-ur-Rahman Qasmi Azmi remained its editor for almost 35 years. Currently, this magazine is being published under the editorship of Maulana Mohammad Salman Bijnori. (For more details, see Chapter Nine under the heading 'Editors of Urdu Magazines').
Similarly, in 1406 AH / 1985 CE, Darul Uloom began publishing the bi-monthly *Aina Darul Uloom* under the editorship of Maulana Kafeel Ahmad Alvi, a series that continued until 1430 AH / 2009 CE.(412)

At present, many seminaries publish their own magazines, and the editorial responsibilities of these are carried out by the alumni of Deoband.
