The Askja volcano in Dyngjufjöll

Dyngjufjöll is a cluster of mountains in the Ódáðahraun lava field in central-eastern Iceland, sitting several hundred metres above the surrounding Icelandic highlands.[1] It lies about 15 km north of Vatnajökull. The mountain range is home to the multiply-ringed Askja volcano, which includes the Öskjuvatn and Víti crater lakes in some of its craters and calderas.

The highest peak at Dyngjufjöll is Þorvaldstindur, at 1510 m.[2]

As well as Askja, Dyngjufjöll is home to the scenic Drekagilgulley.[3]

The Öskjuvatn and Víti lakes and Drekagil are scenic destinations popular with tourists, but they are only open in the summer due to the adverse conditions experienced by much of the Icelandic highlands in the rest of the year.
