This page analyzes North Atlantic tropical cyclones that may have been Category 5's.

Indianola Hurricane of 1886

[edit]

This tropical cyclone was at the very threshold of Category 5 intensity, but is listed at 135 knots. However, it was intensifying up until landfall and had no measurements near the core.

Verdict: 75% Category 5

Hurricane San Ciracao

[edit]

The maximum sustained winds of this tropical cyclone were held at 130 knots as it made landfall on Puerto Rico. Data shows that it never restrengthened into a Category 4 hurricane. Also, 930 mbar is a bit too high for a Category 5 hurricane.

Verdict: 10% Category 5
