Black Hills Brawl is the nickname given to the college football game between the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers and the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets. The two schools are separated by less than 50 miles (80 km) and have been heated rivals since 1885. The two schools, in essence, are not only competing in athletics but are also competing for government and private funding, potential students, and amongst other things academic recognition in the State of South Dakota. It is the longest-running college football rivalry in Division II. On August 19, 2015, it was announced that the 130th game of the rivalry would be broadcast on ESPN3 as the NCAA Division II Game of the Week.
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (commonly referred to as South Dakota Mines, Tech, School of Mines, SDSM&T, or Mines), is an engineering research university located in the state's second largest city, Rapid City. Black Hills State University (commonly referred to as Black Hills State or BH) is located in Spearfish, and is a liberal arts research university. The academic and geographic divergence of the two institutions polarizes the Black Hills region of South Dakota into two fan bases.
History
[edit]Establishment
[edit]South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State were founded just 2 years apart in what was then Dakota Territory. Black Hills State was founded in 1883 as the Dakota Territorial Normal School.[1] South Dakota Mines was founded in 1885 as the Dakota School of Mines.[2]

Traditions
[edit]Fight Songs
[edit]South Dakota Mines has a rich tradition of songs sung throughout the year, one in particular that is directed at Black Hills State. Commonly refered to as "The BH Song", it implies that due to the school's high percentage of undergraduate women, that Black Hills State is a brothel. A school appropriate version depicts BH as an outhouse. Other songs by SDSM&T do not attack Black Hills State in particular, but may have a verse or two that do.
