Jaya Ibrahim (17 April 1948–5 May 2015)[1] was an Indonesian designer and architect who specialised in hotel design.

Early Life

Ibrahim was born on April 17, 1948 in Yogyakarta. He is the son of a Sumatran diplomat and a Javanese princess. He spent his childhood travelling with his parents and lived in Yogyakarta in the house of his maternal grandmother. He graduated from the University of York with a degree in Economics and Sociology and briefly worked as an accountant in London.[2]

Anoushka Hempel

Shortly after his graduation from York, Ibrahim worked as a dishwasher in the kitchens of The Blakes Hotel in London; there, he sought the attention of the hotel's designer and proprietor, actress-turned-interior designer Anoushka Hempel. Starting out as her assistant, Ibrahim later became her apprentice after Hempel recognised his symmetric attention to detail in doing common chores.[3] Under Hempel's inspiration, Ibrahim designed his maiden project, a house for his parents in the 1980s.

Early Career

After spending 20 years in London, Ibrahim returned to Bali.

Death

Ibrahim died on May 5, 2015 from sustained injuries and internal bleeding stemming from a fall from the second floor in his home in East Jakarta. A memorial service was conducted in his [2]
