Policy of the American Society of Addiction Medicine

[edit]

( Can a thread can have a theme song? I nominate this one. )

Fro

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) appears to be in transition on its position about medical cannabis. The organization's advocacy position about marijuana use in general circa 2006 was pretty harsh through 2006 and beyond. On April 1, 2010, it issued a slightly more moderate policy statement specifically about medical marijuana, its first on the topic, as I understand. This 2010 policy statement is normally referred to simply as "the white paper" in ASAM parlance, and it was accompanied by [ a companion document] about the physician's role.

The links to its 2010 policy statment are broken; 30 minutes of looking around on its site shows that most of its links to former policy statements are broken. As I write this, our article's organizational positions section has lists the ASAM as the sole occupant under the sentence, "Other medical organizations recommend a halt to using marijuana as a medicine in U.S.". That sentence has two cites:

The first cite is a broken link whose intended target appears to be this summary page which incorrectly shows that the April 1, 2010 Public Policy Statement on Medical Marijuana] wasn't adopted by the board until September 1, 2010, btw. This 2010 document statement is commonly referred to in subsequent mention by the ASAM as "the white paper".

The second cite is a working link to ASAM press release].

Please examine Developing an ASAM Position on Marijuana, a 27 March 2012 entry from the President's blog, which is also reproduced here in the "policy statement" section of the website, although not attributed there to the President. In reading that, please note that the "white paper" referred to at the end of the first paragraph is the Society's 1 April 2010 policy statement which was adopted on 1 September 2010.

( I found an example at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Department_of_Redundancy_Department/Editnotice , I like that it pops up at the top of the screen when you enter edit mode, but it seems confusing that it also says "Please click here to leave me a new message" when you're already trying to leave a new message. See User_talk:Department_of_Redundancy_Department for how it works. )
