The Premiership of Rachel Notley began on May 24, 2015 when Rachel Notley and her first cabinet were sworn in by Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Notley was the 17th Premier of Alberta, following the 2015 Alberta general election where Notley's New Democratic Party (NDP) won a majority of seats in the Alberta Legislature, ending 44 years of rule by the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta.[1] Notley's NDP government was defeated in the 2019 provincial election by the United Conservative Party, under the leadership of Jason Kenney. Notley became the Leader of the Opposition.
