Yolanda D. Heman-Ackah is an American laryngologist, academic, and author specializing in vocal therapies for professional artists. She is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology in Head and Neck Surgery.[1] Heman-Ackah founded and directed the Voice Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago.[2] She was the head of laryngology and co-director of The Voice Center at the Cleveland Clinic.[3] She is also a faculty member at the Drexel University College of Medicine and Thomas Jefferson University, and is the National Medical Advisor for the Voice and Speech Trainer's Association (VASTA).[4] Heman-Ackah is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Voice.[5] She teaches that the voice is the most important tool in human communication, arguing that it can express the full range of human emotions.[6]
Heman-Ackah received her undergraduate degree in Psychology and her M.D. from Northwestern University.[7][8] She did her residency in otolaryngology, specializing in head and neck surgery, at the University of Minnesota and completed a fellowship in professional voice care and laryngology under Robert T. Sataloff at the American Institute for Voice and Ear Research and Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.[9] She has also worked in the Department of Otolaryngology in Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Illinois in Chicago,[10] Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, the University of Minnesota, and Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis; and worked at the Fairview Hospital in Cleveland, MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, and Philadelphia Ear, Nose and Throat Associates.
Heman-Ackah has been frequently published in the Journal of Voice,[10][11] as well as in the Journal of Singing, Ear, Nose, & Throat Journal,[12] ENT Today, Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America (The Professional Voice),[13] The Annals of Otology Rhinology & Laryngology, Care of the Professional Voice, Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery, Annals of Emergency Medicine, Laryngoscope, and Current Opinion in Otolaryngology & Head & Neck Surgery. She also authored chapters in Laryngotracheal Trauma and The Science of Breath and Voice.
Heman-Ackah's research includes dysphonia[10], glottic closure patterns,[11] vocal fold scars and sulcus vocalis (vocal fold grooves),[12] laryngeal video stroboscopy,[14]
Her early work included delirium in elderly patients,[15]
Her co-authored 2008 paper Flexible Laryngoscopy: A Comparison of Fiber Optic and Distal Chip Technologies. Part 1: Vocal Fold Masses., published in the Journal of Voice, tied for first place for Best Paper in the Basic Science: Clinical Medicine category, awarded by The Voice Foundation.
Heman-Ackah's father was Samuel M. Heman-Ackah, a noted professor of pharmacy and assistant dean at Howard University. Samuel was born in Atuabo, Ghana where he was the hereditary chief of his village, the home of the Nzema people.[16]

- Practical Guidelines on Use of Laryngeal Videostroboscopy. ENT Today. January 2009. "Yolanda D. Heman-Ackah, MD, an otolaryngologist at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, who moderated the session, agreed that the most difficult part of using stroboscopy is understanding which observed pathology is causing the patient's voice complaint. To help otolaryngologists use this instrument, Dr. Heman-Ackah emphasized the importance of a thorough history prior to its use. Otolaryngologists need to listen to the patient's complaints thoroughly and have a keen understanding of the details of the voice complaint prior to performing the stroboscopy, she said. This will allow the otolaryngologist to develop a differential diagnosis prior to performing the stroboscopy and to use the findings to confirm or deny these diagnoses."
