Dale Obert (born November 14, 1970 in McMinnville, Oregon, USA) is an award winning cinematographer and producer based in Los Angeles.

Biography

[edit]

Dale is 'straight outta' Union on Oregon Route 203 to a banking mother and guidance counselor father. He became interested in film during high school, made 16mm movies in Eugene and in Tucson with his University of Arizona Board of Regents full scholarship.

After arriving in LA a few years later, he luckily met and was mentored by cinematographers Michael Grady and Jaime Reynoso, (AMC). He is also inspired by lighting cameramen, Antonio Calvache, Sharone Meir of Oscar winning, Whiplash (2014 film), Darius Khondji, (AFC), and the late Conrad Hall.

His first feature, Into the Fire was photographed on super 16 mm film in Mexico starring Marko Zaror. And to date, Obert's last ten features have taken him to six countries, which include lensing Michael Edward's award winning feature, Runt starring Carl Bradshaw (actor) in Paris, London, Kortrijk, Belgium and Jamaica. He photographed fantasy feature Tales from Beyond starring Adam West, which won many festival awards, including Best Picture at prestigious Shockerfest and Shriekfest. The production sound for Nate Barlow's Tales from Beyond was mixed by Oscar winner, Thomas Curley.[1][2][3]

He has also worked as lighting cameraman on Emmy nominated Extra (TV series), Street Smarts (game show), Subaru Legacy (first generation) commercials with Mel Gibson, Guitar Hero campaign with Jay-Z, Travis Barker, and was a longtime gaffer for the late cinematographer Neal Fredericks of groundbreaking, The Blair Witch Project.

Obert recently photographed Beni Tadd Atoori's multi-award winning feature, Chasing Happiness starring Cerina Vincent, Kashmira Shah, Claude Duhamel and Elisa Donovan. Shah's yogi disguise makeup was conceived by master creature designer, Lee Romaire. [4]

Dale also photographed director Romaire's film, Let's Eat Lolly in Louisiana and California. The award winning film included creature performances by puppeteering legend, Dave Barclay, see David Barclay (puppeteer).

Obert is shooting baseball documentary, Diamond Mind in Chicago, Boston and San Francisco.[5]
