Team KNOx is The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee’s Baja SAE team[1]. Made up of approximately 25 students who volunteer their time and talents each year to conceive, design, and build a small Off-road vehicle without any industrial help. Up against more than 200 other universities, the car is not only judged on durability, but on design and viability as a mass-produced All-terrain vehicle. While the university provides some assistance, the students depend on the generosity of corporate sponsors and members of the community for the majority of the project’s funding. Through this practical application of their studies, students utilize leadership, teamwork, marketing, organization and financial skills to succeed in this venture. The Team KNOx is committed to the advancement of education and the enhancement of the student experience at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee.
History
[edit]The team was formed in 2008 when a group of students took the initiative to design and fabricate their own vehicle, but the team could not participate in the 2009 event.
The first time Team KNOx[2] participated was in Baja SAE India 2010 at the National Automotive Test Tracks(NATRAX)[3] in Pithampur,India, against 80 other teams from different parts of India. It lost at the event and was ranked 72.
The team competed again in Baja SAE India 2011[4]. It consisted of 30 students in the 2nd, 3rd and final years of engineering selected through a rigorous selection process and among these, 25 students were sent to Pithampur. The team was placed among the Top 10[5][6] teams.
The team's Faculty Advisors are Dr. Akshay Dvivedi,[7] and Dr. Arup Kumar Das - assistant professors at IIT Roorkee. The Team Captain is Shivam Jee, Final Year Mechanical Engineering Student.

A third vehicle, 'The Black Pearl' is currently under construction.
The team has successfully cleared Virtual BAJA 2012 and will be participating again in Baja SAE India in 2012.[8]
