Welcome to Nonihat the village of nature......
Hi this is Bipin Sen from New Delhi….
Nonihat, a village in Dumka District of Jharkhand (India) about 28 km from Dumka the District headquarter town in the West. Nonihat This hamlet is located on the foot hills of ridge line known as Madpa Range in Chhotanagpur Plateau. It is also lying alongside a State Highway which runs from Bhagalpur to Dumka and joins with its earstwhile District Headquarter Suri, now in West Bengal. This villages is the seat of the erstwhile state named "Handwa", the palace designed by a British Architect, name not known, is standing in its full glory as one enters the village, occupied by the scions of the Raja Kunwar Hari Singh.
Historically, this village was known as Nunihat, littoral meaning is "Market for Salt". In fact, Sen(s), a major family of this village came from Bengal province to trade salt. The salt used to be carried through the jungles trails either on horse back or cows (male). Till date all the villages where Sen family people migrated have 'Nun Ghar" meaning thereby Salt godown. This can be seen in another village of Sen family called Tharihat.
Demographically, Hindus and Muslims are of this village converged to this village over a century ago in different waves of migration, mostly due to business as numerous tribal villages of Santhals and non Santhals(Dikkus) were dependent on this market. The economic activity was the key reason for this village to come into existance, of course, it had to feed the Handwa toops as well.
Today this village is multi lingual- Hindi, Bangla, Bhojpuri, Angika and Marwadi is spoken and understood by one and all. However, majority of the trader can speak santhali, language of the santhals fluently. By the way, Santhals are the single largest tribe in this globe and belongs to Austro Asiatic family with distant relation with Vietnamese and Khmer. But their features and colour of the skin suggests very strong African link in their lineage.
This village is having numerous mohallas and close to 10 odd schools (primary to high schools put together). It is famous for its vibrant Haat and Festival Fairs, Sweet shops. It also lies on the Kaanwariya route of Bhagalpur to Basukinath. very famous temple of lord Shiva Baba Basukinath dham. This village also known for Naag Mela (June). It is the seat of Naag Devta, Lord of Cobras, since when when, not known. It is said that the idol is found by one of the tribals of the area who was ordained to dig a particular spot near his home where the deity was found. The deity along with Conch shell etc were handed over to one of the priest family in Sukhjora. Since then, all snake bite cases used to be brought for treatment and everybody returned with smile. Al this has changed after the deity lost one of its gems which was on the forehead. It is said that it was sold at a very high price but who so ever sold it or bought it, they lost the entire family in snake bites. But the priest says that it was neither stolen nor sold but it has been lost as the deity is cleaned with Lemon everyday and possibly due to mishandling or negligence it is lost without trace.
This has become a mini township with all adjacent villages got merged due to increase in population and also some people migrated from other villages to the market township. It boasts of different cultures, very well knit society where people and communities maintain a dignified respect for each other.
The High School named as Rani Sonabati Senior Secondary High School, located bang on the state highway. It has produced many illustrious sons from the portals of the School. Many Engineers, Doctors, Army Officers, Bankers, Police and other officers of national repute are allumni of this school. People have gone places from this village itself and some are settled in foreign countries as well.
