Micah Beckwith is an American politician, pastor and teacher who is the Lieutenant Governor-elect of Indiana. A member of the Republican Party, Beckwith is a self-described Christian nationalist[1], and has been described by media outlets as a far-right[2][3][4] politician. Beckwith opposes LGBTQ rights and legal abortion, has claimed the January 6, 2021 United States Capitol attack was "divinely inspired," and has been described as a follower of Cindy Jacobs.[5] He previously served on the board of directors of Hamilton East Public Library, where he led the push for a controversial book removal policy that garnered significant backlash.[6][7][8]
Beckwith, who had been active in right-wing spaces for several years, first entered electoral politics in 2020 when he ran for the open seat in Indiana's 5th congressional district being vacated by Susan Brooks, and was defeated by state senator Victoria Spartz, who went on to narrowly win the general election. He later ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2024, and faced off against state representative Julie McGuire at the nominating convention. Beckwith was considered a long-shot candidate, with McGuire having the endorsement of gubernatorial nominee Mike Braun[9], and even former President Donald Trump[10], however would end up defeating McGuire by a razor-thin margin of 891 to 828 at the convention in what was widely considered a major upset.[4][11][12]
