WikiDiscussion Manager (formerly named WikiVoter) is a Microsoft Windows-based application that assists English Wikipedia editors with participating in Articles for deletion discussions. You can find helpful WikiDiscussion Manager users and moderators in #WDM in the freenode network.

If you want to use v0.8.18, please read this page and the guide. A link to the site for the download is provided in the User requirements section.

Information

[edit]
  • Written in C++ (using .NET for GUI) – when a stable release is reached I will rewrite the GUI.
  • Tool is to assist users in finding interesting discussions and assist those users in doing the basic research associated with contributing to any of Wikipedia's discussion processes.
    • Current focus will be on AfDs. Others will be added in time.

User requirements

[edit]
  • Cannot be used by Anon editors.
  • User must have 250 mainspace (article) edits. This is checked every time that you use this application.
  • User must have {{User WikiDiscussion Manager}} userbox on their user page or if you don't like userboxes for whatever reason just put [[Category:Wikipedians who use WikiDiscussion Manager|{{PAGENAME}}]] on your userpage. The program will not let you use it unless you have one of the two above. (similar to a userlist for AWB or VP, but no moderators. :) )
  • You must not be banned from using this tool. (found to be using sockpuppets is the primary reason for banning)

WikiDiscussion Manager features

[edit]

Currently the features below are ready for testing (beta), all unnamed stuff is alpha

  • Allows easy and informed voting on WP:AfD (more to come... WP:RfA)
    • All effort will be going to WP:AfD, so that I can make this as best as humanly possible.
  • Gather the number of for, oppose, comments and other page specific opinions (done, but buggy because it does not recognize "novel" ways of writing opinions).
  • Counts hits on selected search engines, (currently Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask.com, and IncyWincy (Personal favorite).
    • A link to the URL and the count can be easily copy-pasted, via a button in the program.
  • Automatically writes an edit summary (using the first part of your submission).
  • Allows quick and easy viewing of the article in question, and allows easy copy/pasting from the article to your submission, ("as in quotations")
  • Analyses the edit counts of participants, with those below a chosen number highlighted red.

General clarification

[edit]

This program is used primarily in articles for deletion. The name of the program reflects that Articles for deletion is not a vote process, but is a primary method of finding consensus in discussion. For more information please see the listing in what Wikipedia is not under democracy as well as the deletion process, and guide to deletion. You may also wish to review the list of policies and the list of guidelines before making a decision using WikiDiscussion Manager.

Note – it is planned for expansion to cover more of Wikipedia's discussions. AfD was chosen as it is the largest such process on wikipedia. Others will come in time.

[v0.7.#1]  Done Mboverload welcome message

[edit]

The welcome page says "welcome mboverload" and a user category is needed to use the program hoopydinkConas tá tú? 17:23, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

  1. The user category thing can't be changed right now, but trust me, I will come up with a way for you to put your name somewhere and it look at that as an optional method. (I prefer the user cateoryies as it is automatically sorted, which makes my life easier. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 21:33, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
  2. The mboverload welcome message is fixed. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 21:33, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[v0.7.#5]  Done Auto spacing

[edit]

At the end of votes, there needs to be a space or two, depending on user preference, so that the signature isn't right next to it. --JD[don't talk|email] 00:41, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
