User:Nicolas Perrault III/Catalogue of catalogues of hominin remains

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There exists no centralised online database of all known hominin remains. In the past, several teams have attempted to list them all (Quenstedt and Quenstedt 1936, Hue 1937 (for illustrations), Vallois and Movius 1953, Day 1965). The last major centralised attempt was the 3-volume Catalogue of Fossil Hominids by the National History Museum in London (Oakley, Campbell, and Molleson 1967, 1971, 1975, 1977). Since then a team has attempted to update this catalogue, but instead of publishing a comprehensive volume, they published a series of more than ten extremely obscure (almost Google-proof) fascicles. Because these fascicles are so numerous, and because few libraries have several of them, this attempt fails to provide a centralised database of hominin fossils. There is a Japanese site that attempts to provide a database of hominin remains, but although it may or may not be comprehensive, I have never been able to use it to find something I was looking for. In wait of such a database, here is a catalogue of catalogues of hominin remains.
