Brian Bloomfield was appointed Ulster's new coach in March 1994, replacing Davy McMaster. Bloomfield was vice-principal and rugby coach at Wallace High School, assistant coach at Queen's University, and had previously coached Methody and Collegians. The selection committee consisted of Bloomfield, Richard Milliken, Nigel Carr, Stephen Blake-Knox and Harry Steele.^[1]

Bloomfield's first match in charge was against the Scottish Saltires in April, followed by a friendly against City of Derry to open their new Judges Road ground.
