History
[edit]In 2000, Oz Lotteries’ parent company, Jumbo Interactive, known as Jumbomall.com at the time, began selling lottery tickets online for the RSL Art Union.[1]
In 2005, Jumbo Corporation acquired TMS Global Services, which held internet selling agreements with Tattersall's and NSW Lotteries and additional lotteries were added, with Oz Lotteries selling the Australian Oz Lotto and Powerball games for the first time. This was achieved through agreements with the Tatts Group and a number of state run lottery organisations. [2]
By 2011, Oz Lotteries launched its app, which would later grow to 75% of all sales. The percentage of lottery tickets sold online increased rapidly, driven primarily by younger, tech-savvy demographics.
In 2015, Jumbo interactive launched the first Oz Lottery App for Apple Watch[3][4]
In 2016, the company began a complete rewrite of the software platform to meet growing demands of online lottery sales. The project was completed in 2018, just in time for the new Powerball game matrix, which was launched that same year.
In 2017, the Tatts group extended its agreement with Jumbo Interactive to re-sell lotteries on its Oz Lotteries platform for a further 5 years. [5]
In 2018, Oz Lotteries developed a new software platform to provide a higher capacity during high jackpot draws after crashing during the the first $100 million Powerball in Australian history in August 2018. [6] The company also launched a product for group syndicates called Lotto Party [7]
In 2019, the Oz Lotteries increased the number of active online customers 74% totalling 761,863. In FY19, Oz Lotteries grew $321 million in ticket sales, a 75% increase over the previous year. During the financial year, there were 49 (2018:32) large jackpots with an average value of $38.4 million (2018:$28.4 million).
In 2020, the agreement with Tabcorp was extended a further 10 years[8]. COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing pushed more lottery buyers online, with Oz Lotteries experiencing an influx of new older demographic buyers[9]. In FY20, Oz Lotteries sold $340 million in ticket sales, up 6% from FY19 despite a 20% drop in the number of large jackpots.
