There have been several by-elections to replace deceased elected hereditary peers who sat under the provisions of the House of Lords Act 1999.

Replacing Viscount of Oxfuird, 2003

George Makgill, 13th Viscount of Oxfuird died 3 January 2003. The by-election to replace him took place on the 25 and 26 March, with the result being announced 27 March.

Lord Oxfuird occupied a hereditary seat elected by the whole House and so the by-election to fill the seat also had the whole House as the electorate. 426 of the eligible 661 peers cast ballots.

There were a total of 81 candidates, 37 of whom received no first preferences. The first round result was as follows:

By the final round, the vote came down to:

with 156 votes unable to be transferred.

Viscount Ullswater was duly elected.

Replacing Baron Milner of Leeds, 2003

Arthur Milner, 2nd Baron Milner of Leeds died 20 August 2003. The by-election to replace him took place on 28 and 29 October, with the result being announced 30 October.

Lord Milner of Leeds occupied a hereditary seat elected by the Labour peers and so the by-election to fill the seat had the three other Labour elected hereditary peers as the electorate. All three Labour peers voted.

There were a total of 11 candidates, 9 of whom received no first preferences. No elimination of candidates was necessary and the first round result was:

  • Christopher Suenson-Taylor, 3rd Baron Grantchester (Lab) - 2 votes
  • Viscount Hanworth (Lab) - 1 vote
  • Lord Biddulph (C), the Earl of Carlisle (L Dem), Lord Clifford of Chudleigh (XB), Lord Hacking (Lab), Lord HolmPatrick (Ind), the Earl of Kimberley (Ind), Lord Monkswell (Lab), Viscount Samuel (Ind) and Lord Vaux of Harrowden (C) all received 0 votes.

Lord Grantchester was duly elected.

Replacing Baron Vivian, 2004

Nicholas Vivian, 6th Baron Vivian died 28 February 2004. The by-election to replace him took place on 11 and 12 May, with the result being announced 13 May.

Lord Vivian occupied a hereditary seat elected by the Conservative peers and so the by-election to fill the seat had the 48 remaining Conservative elected hereditary peers as the electorate. 45 of these cast votes.

There were a total of 37 candidates, 25 of whom received no first preferences. The first round result was as follows:

  • Hugh Trenchard, 3rd Viscount Trenchard - 8 votes
  • Viscount Weir - 7 votes
  • Charles Cathcart, 7th Earl Cathcart - 7 votes (later elected in 2007)
  • John Eccles, 2nd Viscount Eccles - 7 votes (later elected in 2005)
  • Viscount Torrington - 5 votes
  • Rupert Ponsonby, 7th Baron de Mauley - 4 votes (later elected in 2005)
  • Lord Rathcavan - 2 votes
  • Viscount Addison - 1 vote
  • Viscount Brentford - 1 vote

  • Lord Norrie - 1 vote
  • Lord Terrington - 1 vote
  • Lord Ashbourne, Lord Biddulph, Lord Birdwood, Lord Cadman, Lord Carew, Lord Chesham, Earl Cowley, Lord De Ramsey, Lord Gainford, Viscount Hood, Lord Kenilworth, Lord Killearn, Earl of Kimberley, Earl of Kinnoull, Earl of Lauderdale, Lord Margadale, Lord Milverton, Lord Morris, Lord Newall, Lord Pender, Lord Poole, Lord Rowallan, Lord Strathcarron, Lord Sudeley, Lord Vaux of Harrowden all received 0 votes.

By the final round, the vote came down to:

Replacing Earl Russell, 2005

Conrad Russell, 5th Earl Russell died 14 October 2004. The by-election to replace him took place 10 and 11 January 2005, with the result being declared 12 January.

Lord Russell occupied a hereditary seat elected by the Liberal Democrat peers and so the by-election to fill the seat had the 4 remaining Liberal Democrat elected hereditary peers as the electorate, who all cast votes.

There were a total of 3 candidates, of who only one received any first preferences. The result was:

The Earl of Glasgow was duly elected.

Replacing Baron Burnham, 2005

Hugh Lawson, 6th Baron Burnham died 1 January 2005. The by-election to replace him took place 8 and 9 March 2005, with the result being declared 10 March.

Lord Burnham occupied a hereditary seat elected by the Conservative peers and so the by-election to fill the seat had the 47 remaining Conservative elected hereditary peers as the electorate. 42 of these cast votes.

There were a total of 36 candidates, 25 of whom received no first preferences. The first round result was as follows:

Replacing Baron Aberdare, 2005

Morys Bruce, 4th Baron Aberdare died 23 January 2005. The by-election to replace him took place 20 and 21 March 2005, with the result being declared 22 March.

Lord Aberdare occupied a hereditary seat elected by the whole House and so the by-election to fill the seat also had the whole House as the electorate. 348 of the eligible 687 peers cast ballots.

There were a total of 36 candidates, 10 of whom received no first preferences. The first round result was as follows:

  • John Eccles, 2nd Viscount Eccles (C) - 92 votes

Cherry Drummond, 16th Baroness Strange died 10 March 2005. The by-election to replace him took place 21 and 22 June 2005, with the result being declared 23 June.

Baroness Strange occupied a hereditary seat elected by the Cross Bench peers and so the by-election to fill the seat had the 29 remaining Cross Bench elected hereditary peers as the electorate. 28 of these cast votes.

There were a total of 26 candidates, 19 of whom received no first preferences. The first round result was as follows:

Charles Stourton, 26th Baron Mowbray died 12 December 2006. The by-election to replace him took place 5 and 6 March 2007, with the result being declared 7 March.

Lord Mowbray occupied a hereditary seat elected by the Conservative peers and so the by-election to fill the seat had the 47 remaining Conservative elected hereditary peers as the electorate. 43 of these cast votes.

There were a total of 43 candidates, 31 of whom received no first preferences. The first round result was as follows:

Replacing Baroness Darcy de Knayth, 2008

Davina Ingrams, 18th Baroness Darcy de Knayth died 24 February 2008. The by-election to replace her took place [dates], with the result being declared 22 May.

Baroness Darcy de Knayth occupied a hereditary seat elected by the Cross-bench peers and so the by-election to fill the seat had the ## remaining Cross-bench elected hereditary peers as the electorate. 26 of these cast votes.

Replacing Viscount Bledisloe, 2009

Christopher Bathurst, 3rd Viscount Bledisloe died 12 May 2009. The by-election to replace him took place [dates], with the result being declared 15 July.

Viscount Bledisloe occupied a hereditary seat elected by the Cross-bench peers and so the by-election to fill the seat had the 29 remaining Cross-bench elected hereditary peers as the electorate. 27 of these cast votes.
