Gregg Simpson
[edit]Artist and musician, Gregg Simpson was born in Ottawa in 1947, and moved to the west coast with his family when he was 6 months old. He first came to attention during the mid-1960's when he was involved in multi-media events and as a noted jazz drummer. Simpson began his visual art career in 1967, exhibiting at the Bau-xi Gallery, Simon Fraser University, U.B.C., and the Vancouver Art Gallery in solo, group and three person shows.
In 1971, supported by a Canada Council grant and a letter of introduction from William Rubin of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, he traveled to London and Paris to organized the first group exhibition of west coast art to tour Europe.
This exhibition, entitled Canadian West Coast Hermetics, co-curated with Alvin Balkind of the UBC Fine Arts Gallery, was seen in Paris in 1973, by French art historian, José Pierre, who put him in his landmark book, L'Univers Surréaliste (ed. Somogy, Paris, 1983). Simpson's work has continued to be published and exhibited in Europe and North America with the leading historical figures of Surrealism and with other major figures of 20th century art. such as Pierre Alechinsky, Jean Arp, Hans Bellmer, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dali, Alberto Giacometti, Wifredo Lam, Rene Magritte, Andre Masson, Roberto Matta, Joan Miro, Henry Moore, Robert Motherwell, and Man Ray.
His work was written about as part of the legacy of Surrealism in Canada in two studies, a PhD Thesis presented at the Sorbonne in Paris and in the 1979 touring exhibition, Other Realities from Queen’s University. In 2001, he was the subject of a treatise by Professor Antonio Malmo of the Accademia Tiberina in Rome. In May 2000, his work was shown in, in a 14th century castle in Montalcino, Tuiscany.
