MANAA or Media Action Network for Asian Americans is an organisation dedicated to monitoring all facets of the media: Hollywood, television, print, advertising, radio, and others.
They are advocating for the balanced, sensitive and positive portrayals of Asia Pacific Americans. A non-profit group formed in April of 1992 by Guy Aoki and George Toshio Johnston, to address the negative stereotypes perpetuated by the American media, which affects all Asian Americans, hurting not only their self image, but also affects how non-Asian Americans treat them. Due to the ubiquity of the Hollywood machine, these stereotypes are also promulgated in much of the English speaking world.
The founders experienced that Asian Americans are all lumped together in the same group and that there is a widespread ignorance about the diversity of the Asian people. Their motto is "To create an environment free of racism through accurate, balanced, and sensitive Asian American images."
