Application's of Charles's Law

[edit]
Hot air balloon

A torch with large enough flame to heat up the air inside the hot air is used so that as temperature increases, so does the kinetic energy of the air molecules. This makes the molecules vibrate faster and occupy more space, decreasing the density of air inside in relation to the surrounding air. Thus, the hot air balloon rises as the outside air exerts upthrust on the balloon which results in buoyancy(floating).

Turkey timer

The pop-up thermometers places inside a cooking turkey works using Charles's Law. As the temperature rises inside an oven, the air inside the thermometer expands to occupy a greater volume. The plunger pops as it is calibrated to do so as a desired temperature, indicating the turkey is ready.

Tyre pressure

The recommended tyre pressure from a manufacture is always when they are cold. This is because the air inside the tyre heats up due to friction when in contact with the road as the car is driven. The increase in temperature results in an increase in pressure exerted by the air on the walls of the tyre as the volume is constant. Usually, an increase in every 10° Celsius will increase the tyre pressure by 1 psi and vice versa.

Deflated ping pong ball

A deflated ping pong ball is submerged into a body of warm water which heats up the air inside the ball causing it to occupy more space. The expanding air exerts outward force on the inner wall of the ball to inflate the dent.
