Endoparasitic is a 2022 survival horror game developed by Narayan Walters.[1]

Gameplay

[edit]

The player takes the role of an unnamed protagonist in a facility that is being overrun with a parasite outbreak. At the beginning of the game, the protagonist is infected with this parasite, and mysterious monsters rip three of his limbs off; being his left arm and both legs. To represent this disability of only being able to use one arm, the games movement and combat is controlled exclusively with a computer mouse. Actions such as using a vaccine to delay the inevitable death from the parasite and reloading a gun one bullet at a time must be done manually. The game keeps track of which bullets in the gun chamber are loaded and which ones are not, meaning that a faultily reloaded gun could result in failure to shoot. The player can also interact with optional computer terminals and logs for pieces of story and lore.[2][3]

Release and reception

[edit]

Endoparasitic was originally developed by Narayan Walters (also known as Miziziziz) for a Ludum Dare competition in 2021.[4][5] A full version of the game was published for Steam on October 24, 2022.[6][1] The game was well received by Kaan Serin of Rock Paper Shotgun, stating that the game being minimal gave it a lot of mileage and served as a hollow reminder of "if you’re not careful, you’ll mutate into the creatures in the shadows."[2] North by Northwestern wrote that the games mechanics were "cleverly implemented" and that it was a "solid indie-horror effort for fans of works like John Carpenter’s The Thing."[3]
