Route description
[edit]Interstate 495 starts at Interstate 440 (Exit 419) on the east side of Raleigh. Interstate 495/ US 64/ US 264 heads east from there towards Knightdale. The speed limit is 70 Miles an hour along the entire routing of Interstate 495.
History
[edit]In February of 2013 NCDOT sent a request to AASHTO for a axillary route of I-95. The original routing was to go from Interstate 440 in Raleigh to Interstate 95 in Rocky Mount for a total of 44.9 Miles. AASHTO sent back a request saying that Interstate 495 should be routed from Interstate 440 to Interstate 540 and mark the rest of the route as Future Interstate 495. It also said to not renumber Interstate 540 because it would connect to another Interstate. The reason AASHTO sent back this request was because a section of US 64 near Nashville was not to interstate standards. On December 12th, 2013 NCDOT announced they would number I-495 from Interstate 440 to Interstate 540 with future signage from I-540 to I-95.
