History

Formation of Like Monroe (2012-2013)

[edit]

[3]Like Monroe was first announced in 2012 after member changes were made and the music started to move in a different direction. Ty Johnson, Wade Concienne, Alex Lofton, and Jacob Cardinal were all members in the previous A Candle Lit City (formed in 2006). with a completely different vocal approach, musical content, and over all purpose

Members Ty Johnson (vocals), Wade Concienne (guitar and vocals), Chris Deckard (guitar and vocals) Alex Lofton (bass) and Nathan Richie (drums) funneled raw emotions into "Things We Think, But Never Speak," a ferocious collection of songs that veer from guttural screams to potential pop crossovers. It tackles a variety of topics, from family conflict and a girlfriend's miscarriage to substance abuse, rehab and relapse. Johnson and Concienne have been playing together since high school. (Their previous band, A Candle Lit City, picked up some local traction.) Like Monroe, however, was just a year old in March, when it signed with Good Fight Music / eOne Music, a label known for its roster of punk, rock and metal acts. The band immediately began recording at Blackbear Studios in Cypress with producer Drew Fulk, known for his work with metal acts Motions in White and Upon a Burning Body.

Deckard's lyrical contributions originated two years ago as journal entries during time in rehab and jail for drug possession. He says he "never intended to do music again" - instead putting his words to paper as a way of dealing with issues of self-worth and feeling like an outsider growing up in Friendswood.

"I ended up discovering a lot of things about myself that I liked and that I didn't like," he says. "Growing up, I didn't verbalize a lot of stuff because I thought people were going to judge me or look at me a certain way. The writing process humbled me a lot. I realized that I wasn't a (expletive), and that I didn't have everything figured out."

Deckard says music was "more a right than a privilege" at home because of his grandfather - blues great B.B. King. Deckard taught himself to play guitar by memorizing John Mayer songs.
