Guillermo ("Willy") Kuschel Gerdes (13 July 1918 – 1 August 2017) was an entomologist and university teacher who was born in Chile and emigrated to New Zealand. His particular interest was Curculionidae, a family of weevils within the order Coleoptera (beetles).
Biography
[edit]He was one of eleven brothers and sisters, and the longest to survive.[1]

Footnotes
[edit]- ^ Kuschel is an uncommon surname (cf. de:Kuschel); however, kuscheln is a German verb. When a biologist assigns a name to a taxon, it is customary that they explain the reason for their choice. It is always wise to check the original publication to be sure of that reason. For example, Richard L. Hoffman stated that he named Kuschelodesmus in honour of his distinguished contemporary.[15]
