My name is Abrewatia Aba Mansa, acting as custodian and final arbiter of all matters concerning the Akwamu Amanpong Kofi Gua, also known as the Great Akwamu Black Stool, its Stool lands, Akwamu’s rich and storied history, and appurtenances thereof.
**Historical Context**
My capacity as Abrewatia cannot be questioned. The law, courts, and tradition require an Abrewatia of the Akwamu Amanpong Kofi Gua to trace their matrilineal lineage to the progenitor of our Great Black Stool, Yaa Ansaa. I meet that burden through my late mother, Mrs. Alice Addaquay, who traces her lineage through her maternal great uncle, Nana Akoto Kwadwo, interred at Bermu, the final resting place of Akwamu Paramount Chiefs of royal lineage.
Nana Akoto Kwadwo traces his royal lineage through his maternal grandmother Ama Ansaa, who in turn traces her lineage through her mother, our progenitor, Yaa Ansaa. The Yaa Ansaa family remains forever indebted to Mfansteman for hosting and protecting Ama Ansaa during a time of great peril and constant wars.
Akwamus, like the majority of Akans, migrated from modern-day Southern Sudan, moving through Ivory Coast and the Bono Region to Twifo Hermang in the Central Region, where we established statehood before moving to our present location in the Eastern Region. Kofi Akoto, Yaa Ansaa’s biological son, offered his blood to “Blacken” our Stool, finalizing the most important rite to declare statehood within the Akan traditional context. Our war song is named after Kofi Akoto, honoring his sacrifice.
**Key Historical Figures and Traditions**
1. **Nana Asemeni** - A prodigy of the land, defeated the Dutch at Osu Christiansborg Castle in 1693. All incoming Paramount Chiefs must sit on a sacred stone in front of the Asemeni family house during their enstoolment.
2. **Otumfuo and Odeneho Titles** - Akwamu invented the title Otumfuo for its Paramount Chiefs in 1505. The title Odeneho is reserved for Regent Chiefs.
3. **Support to Asanteman** - Akwamu protected Osei Tutu I and offered him soldiers who formed the core of the Ashanti fighting machinery. Opoku Ware II acknowledged Akwamu’s sacrifices to Asanteman.
**Legal and Traditional Points**
The Supreme Court ruling on May 4th, 2022, established the following:
1. The Akwamu Kofi Amanpong Gua belongs exclusively to the Yaa Ansaa Family (100% ownership).
2. Tenure on the Paramountcy is not rotational with any competing gates, clans, or families.
3. Only an Abrewatia who can trace their matrilineal lineage to Yaa Ansaa can nominate, install, or destool a Paramount Chief.
4. Queen Mothers do not exist in the Akwamu tenure system and cannot nominate, install, or destool a Chief.
**Issues with Bernard Owiredu**
Bernard Owiredu's actions have breached traditional and legal norms:
- He has not rendered any accounting of Stool lands for 15 years, violating Ghana’s Consolidated Land Laws.
- He doctored an official government gazette form, fraudulently signing the signature of a deceased Akwamu Traditional Council President.
- He circumvented the role of the Ebusuapayin of the Yaa Ansaa Family during the gazetting process.
- He allowed occultic figures to perform rites in the Great Stool Room, violating established norms.
**Conclusion and Call to Action**
We remain resolute in our demands for Bernard Aboagye Owiredu's destoolment. We have eligible men of sound mind, ethically grounded, and ready to lead. We need leadership that respects our traditions and laws. Akwamu predates Asanteman by 200 years, and we must honor our history and rightful heritage.
Kwafo Akoto II, on his dying bed, stated, “Mun fa Akonngwa no san kɔ ma Fantifoɔ no a wɔwɔ Madina, efisɛ ɛyɛ wɔn dea,” affirming that the Stool belongs to the Yaa Ansaa Family.
