Background
[edit]Alex Nackman is an American singer, songwriter, and producer. His music has been featured often on MTV's The Real World (seasons in Denver, Hollywood, Brooklyn, and Cancun) as well as The Hills, Laguna Beach, and others. He has also provided and written music for Bravo, Oxygen, and Bunim-Murray Productions.[1] In 2004, he began releasing music on his self-founded and self-funded label, Long Road Records. The label later altered its name to Long Road Recordings in early 2010.[2]
Nackman's music has been described as a blend between British-alternative rock and American folk. Writer William Rulhmann at All Music Guide (AMG), wrote in 2008, "Nackman has a throaty tenor and, with exceptions, tends to favor piano-based, mid-tempo pop/rock arrangements...which creates a sound suggestive of Marc Cohn fronting Coldplay".[3] Having opened and shared the stage with Norah Jones, The Roots, Tim Reynolds, Zac Brown Band, and others, Nackman has built up a sizable following and favorable press.
Background
[edit]Alex Nackman was born on October 20, 1983 and grew up in Sleepy Hollow, New York. He began his musical endeavors at age 5, playing the violin and still remains a classically trained violinist. While a member of the Westchester County Youth Symphony in Westchester County, New York at age 16, the orchestra garnered performances at the lauded Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Avery Fisher Hall. Nackman is a self-taught guitarist of 17 years as well as a self-taught piano player of 8 years. He attended Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA in 2002, focusing on Political Science and French, while also touring relentlessly throughout the northeast and running Long Road Records from his campus apartment. Nackman currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.[4]
Albums
[edit]Nackman released two raw acoustic records, "Good Impressions" and "Stages EP" in 2003 and 2004 respectively. "Stages EP" is a live recording with tracks taken from a live performance at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, GA and The Point in Bryn Mawr, PA, a landmark acoustic venue that has since closed.
In June 2005, Alex released a full-band album, A Boy Who Thought He Knew on Long Road Records. The release was produced by David Shaw (Van Morrison, Etta James, Jerry Garcia) and recorded in Philadelphia. The album also includes guest performances from former Ray Charles bassist Steve Beskrone and Amos Lee drummer Fred Berman.
In October 2006, Alex released his fourth album, Sunrise Falls, which was recorded in Leesburg, Virginia and New York City. The album was produced by former Pat McGee Band pianist Todd Wright, current Pat McGee Band guitarist Brian Fechino, and Alex Nackman himself.[5] Famed mixing engineer, Jeff Juliano (John Mayer, Josh Kelley, Lifehouse) mixed the record. The album also features the late drummer of the Pat McGee Band and Nackman's close friend, Chris Williams, who died unexpectedly on October 28, 2006 in Richmond, VA,[6] just one week after the album was released. Nackman followed the release of the new album with tour dates throughout the U.S., including shows with Cheyenne Kimball and Josh Hoge. Nackman also toured throughout the UK in support of Sunrise Falls for much of 2007, which he was supposed to do with Chris Williams. Nackman decided to tour solo acoustically for the entire run.[7]
Alex finished his fifth record, Still Life Moves, in New York, in December 2007. The album was released on March 4, 2008. Nackman's touring band backed him on the album, which marked the first time a cohesive and collective group recorded with Nackman in the studio.
A sixth release, titled "This Revolution," is being recorded in New York and Oregon, and has been slated for an early 2011 release. Nackman continues to also write and compose music for television and film.[8]
