The word catacoustic means reflecting sounds. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Catacoustic Consort [1] is a chamber music ensemble that presents a variety of vocal and instrumental music from Renaissance chamber music to Baroque opera, roughly from the years 1400 to 1760, with the intent of recreating the sound of the music when it was originally performed.

Concerts are conducted in a style known as “historically-informed performances.” The music is performed on period instruments such as the viola da gamba, theorbo, organ, harpsichord, Baroque guitar, and lute. Catacoustic is dedicated to approaching music with an understanding of the life and times of when it was originally played, including an informed humanities presentation to accompany its programs. Some of the composers of early music include J.S. Bach, William Byrd, Giulio Caccini, and Boismortier.

Grand Prize Winner of the Early Music America Live Recording competition in 2003, Catacoustic released a CD on the Naxos label of their award winning Italian Dramatic Laments program internationally in January 2006. A result of winning this national competition, artistic director Annalisa Pappano was also featured on the cover of Early Music America magazine.

In addition to its Cincinnati-based concert series, Catacoustic offers touring concerts; workshops for amateur and pre-professional musicians to study lute, recorder, and viola da gamba; lectures for local interest groups and universities; and outreach for seniors and children.

Artistic director Annalisa Pappano is a highly-sought-after performer of the lirone, pardessus, and viola da gamba. She has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Ms. Pappano has been recognized for bringing together the best talent to present groundbreaking programs and landmark performances.

The Catacoustic Consort is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Catacoustic's mission is:

1) to present a variety of rare and exciting world-class early music concerts.

2) to unify the arts and humanities through musical events in a nurturing and educational environment for the participants.

3) to create an environment that contributes to encouraging the retention and attraction of professionals - both in musical and business communities of Ohio.
