John Teira (born September 24, 1980) is a distinguished lawyer and an influential Ugandan legislator, currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Bugabula North County under the National Resistance Movement (NRM)[1] since May 2021. In addition to his parliamentary duties, he holds the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee[2] at the Parliament of Uganda, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping legislative policy and ensuring adherence to Uganda’s constitutional framework.

With an extensive background in legal practice, Hon. John Teira is a Partner at Cristal Advocates, a leading Ugandan law firm known for its comprehensive solutions in corporate law and litigation. Since joining Cristal Advocates in 2017, he has been instrumental in providing high-level legal services and advising on complex legal matters, contributing significantly to the firm’s prominence in Uganda’s legal landscape.

Prior to his parliamentary role, Hon. Teira served as the Private Secretary to the President of Uganda from 2011 to 2015, where he managed sensitive state matters and provided strategic legal counsel to the Office of the President. John Teira was born on September 26, 1980, raised in the village of Namaira, nestled in Balawoli Subcounty, Bugabula North County, Kamuli District, within the culturally rich Busoga Sub-region of Eastern Uganda. His roots in this vibrant rural community have instilled in him a deep sense of commitment to public service and a strong connection to the values of his heritage. John is the son of George William Teira Iduului, who passed away in 2012, and Magret Nabandi, who played a pivotal role in nurturing his character and ambition.

John’s educational journey began in local schools, where he excelled academically, fueled by a keen interest in justice and governance. His academic dedication led him to Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda’s most prestigious institution, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree. With a strong foundation in legal studies, John furthered his professional training with a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, equipping him with the practical expertise required for effective legal representation and advocacy.

John Teira began his distinguished career in law and public service in June 2006, when he joined Shonubi Musoke & Company Advocates as a Legal Clerk. During his tenure, he honed his skills in legal documentation, research, and case preparation, laying a strong foundation for his future in the legal profession.

In July 2007, John transitioned to Post Bank Uganda as a Legal Clerk, where he played a critical role in the bank’s legal operations. His responsibilities included overseeing the perfection of all securities mortgaged with the bank, drafting and verifying legal documents, and analyzing securities for loan applications. He also provided legal advice to clients and staff, managed the bank’s interactions with external law firms, and handled court documentation on matters involving the bank. His work contributed to the bank’s compliance and operational efficiency, demonstrating his expertise in banking law and legal procedures.

In July 2011, John’s career took a pivotal turn when he was appointed Assistant Private Secretary to the President of Uganda, focusing on youth affairs. In this role, he advised the President on policies and initiatives aimed at empowering Uganda’s youth, ensuring that their potential was recognized and harnessed for national development. His commitment to youth development further solidified his reputation as a dedicated public servant.

In August 2013, John established himself as an advocate, offering specialized legal services and consultancy in banking and commercial law, areas in which he had already demonstrated considerable expertise. His focus on these fields made him a sought-after advisor and consultant for corporate clients.

In December 2019, he became a Partner at Cristal Advocates, where he continues to provide high-level legal counsel, contributing his in-depth knowledge of Uganda’s commercial and banking law.

John Teira has been married to Samalie Nakimbugwe since 2010, and together they share a commitment to family values and community service. Rooted in a deep sense of responsibility toward his home district of Kamuli, John is actively involved in several charitable initiatives designed to uplift the lives of the less fortunate. His philanthropic efforts are particularly focused on improving infrastructure and promoting education, especially for young girls.

Driven by his belief in the power of education, John supports initiatives that encourage girls’ education, striving to create opportunities for young women to pursue their dreams and achieve independence. Additionally, he has funded road construction projects in rural villages, enhancing access and mobility for local residents and contributing to the socio-economic growth of Kamuli.
