Designations
[edit]This Peckett and Sons Class R3 Saddle Tank Was Built in September 1929 at the Atlas Works in Bristol. This R3 Had a Whyte of 0-4-0ST.
The Wheels are a diameter of 3'0½" (900mm). This Leads to some issues with traction, especially on wet hills.
There are Two Cylinders each of dimensions of 12" by 20".
The Length of the Wheel Base is identical to the R4 Production Peckett's of 5'6". The only Major Difference is the Full Length. The Front foot plate is wider than the R4's giving easy access across the front.
Life
[edit]Kilmersdon started the Working Life at the Kilmersdon Colliery in 1930's.
It worked there from this the 1930's until the Nationalisation of the Coal Fields and Associated collieries into the National Coal Board on the 12th July 1946. The Colliery was Shut by the NCB and the loco was preserved straight form this.
In August 1973 it was given over to the Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust. When it moved from Kilmersdon Mine to Radstock Stopping off at the Camerton Traction Engine Rally.
The Locomotive was then moved with the Somerset & Dorset Railway Museum Trust to Washford railway station on the West Somerset Railway. This was also when the Trust Removed the 'Museum' Part of the name. This All took place in 1983.
the locomotive was then transferred to the [[Helston Railway] in Cornwall as there Main Steam Locomotive whilst there Second Steam Locomotive 'William Murdoch' was under repair and major overhaul. During Spring 2018, it was transferred to the railway, with a stopping off at the Camborne Trevithick Day, celebrating the Life of Richard Trevithick. Kilmersdon will Stay with the railway Until Winter 2019/2020, where it will be returned for a Major renovation, to renew her Boiler Ticket.
