These world famous Venice Graffiti Walls were initially built in 1961 as part of a recreation facility. When they were first built, people would illegally graffiti them in a specific area called "The Pit" of the Venice Pavilion. 38 years later, the Pavilion was torn down but the walls were maintained and kept as a keep sake for the city. The history of these walls were restored when people could legally paint on them in 2000.[1] Artists are welcome to paint on the graffiti walls for free every weekend, a permit is all that is needed.[2]
