The Jack-O'-Lantern fungus can have a cap size that ranges from 4 to 12 cm in diameter.[1] These Jack-O'-Lantern mushrooms have true gills, which can help to differentiate them from two species of similar colored chanterelles (Cantharellus lateritius; C. cibarius). They exhibit either blunt ridges or a smooth surface when compared to the "true gills" of the Jack-O'-Lantern fungus.[2] Another species of woodland fungi that could possibly be confused for the Jack-O'-Lantern is the sulfur mushroom (Laetiporus sulphureus). This fungus can be identified for its pore-like underside.[3]
