Taschereau family (Quebec)

The Taschereau family was prominent in Quebec, Canada, for a period spanning three centuries. Members of the family were active in the legal system, public affairs and government. One member of the family became Premier of Quebec, while three served on the Supreme Court of Canada, including two who became Chief Justice of Canada.

First Generation: 18th Century

Thomas-Jacques Taschereau (1680-1749) and his wife, Marie-Claire de Fleury de La Gorgendière, were the founders of the Taschereau family. Thomas-Jacques was born in France and came to Quebec in the employ of the Intendant. He married Marie-Claire when he was 48 and she was in her teens. Together they had fourteen children, of whom only two survived him. He became the first seigneur of the seigneurie of Sainte-Marie-de-la-Nouvelle-Beauce, south of Quebec City.
