Opening Access to SF: City Tech Science Fiction Symposium 2021 Wikipedia Editathon

[edit]

Dates: Monday, December 6 to Friday, December 10 at midnight.

The 6th Annual City Tech Science Fiction Symposium, organized by the archivists of CUNY's New York City College of Technology, commemorates the growing City Tech Science Fiction Collection. In the spirit of the 2021 conference theme of open access, the keynote presenters and Wikipedians (Mozucat and Doctorxgc) have asked that online participants take an active role in increasing access to science fiction and science fiction scholarship to the world. Wikipedia is a noncommercial, open access place where readers might learn about paywalled scholarly content from those with academic library database privileges.

Your job: During the second week of December, we ask you to edit the content of a Wikipedia entry for your favorite SF author; add a citation to a scholarly work to the entry of one of their novels; add information about the archives or special collections; or choose a quote from a writer's work to illustrate a theme (see: a quote added by students to Butler's Kindred here).

But how? Perhaps you have some information that could improve an already established SF article.[1] Or you recently stumbled on an SF article that could use some copyediting.[2] Or you visited Wikipedia only to find that your beloved SF author/text has no article yet.[3] If so,

Be bold! Join us in making one change, large or small, to “the encyclopedia that anyone can edit.” Here are two short videos explaining how to create a Wikipedia account (not a requirement to edit Wikipedia) and how to edit Wikipedia (it’s easy!):

Want to learn more about the editathon? Chat online with us on the Wikimedia NYC #citytech-scific Discord channel--you can ask any questions at any time during the week. Just click the above link, enter in your email, and click on the #citytech-scifi channel on the left sidebar!  Or direct your questions to Ann Matsuuchi (amatsuuchi@lagcc.cuny.edu) and Ximena Gallardo C. (xgallardo@lagcc.cuny.edu)

There is no experience required, and Wikipedia newbies are encouraged! Join us at any time to pitch in during #[ADD HASHTAG HERE]!

All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC's Code of Conduct.

How to join us

[edit]
  • Attend our keynote on Zoom on December 09 at [ADD LINK AND DETAILS]!
  • If you are new to Wikipedia editing check out the many guides and quick online tutorials here. Take a look at the short YouTube videos linked to above, or look in the Resources section below for more options.
  • Create a Wikipedia account and join our team [DASHBOARD LINK HERE?]! When creating an account, we recommend choosing a username that is personal to you, but doesn't personally identify you, as edits are publicly tied to your username. If you already have an account, please sign-up via the Dashboard. This helps us track everyone who edits with us and see how many pages we add to and create!
