Speaking in Tongues is a play by Australian play, film and television writer Andrew Bovell. It was first performed in Sydney in 1996, and first published the same year.[1] It was later adapted into the film Lantana (2001).
Plot Summary
[edit]Speaking in Tongues has two sections. The first opens on four characters, Leon, Sonja, Pete and Jane. Pete and Sonja are in a hotel room, as are Leon and Jane. Leon and Sonja are husband and wife, as are Pete and Jane. The two scenes take simultaneously, but without any explicit interaction between them. Some of the dialogue is spoken in unison with the characters in the opposing scene.
Leon and Jane talk about their marriages, about what is driving them to infidelity, discuss giving up on the infidelious liason, but then engage in intercourse, where the scene ends.
Pete and Sonja talk about the same topics, but then choose not to consummate their infidelity. The scene ends.
The second section relates events following the infidelity.
