"The Hero That Was!", alternately known as "The Origin of Captain America!", is a story published in Captain America #109, an American comic book published by Marvel Comics in January 1969. Written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, it is a retelling of the origin story of the superhero Captain America.
Plot

[edit]Though Kirby continued to illustrate occasional fill-in issues of Captain America, "The Hero That Was!" marks the effective end of the artist's 1960s run on the series; he would return to Captain America in 1975, as both the writer and artist of the story arc "Madbomb".
