Open Studio is a free, open-source[1] IDE project for the Microsoft's .NET platform released under GPLv2. It currently supports VB.NET, C#, F# (partial), Boo (partial), and IronPython. The project is ran by young people, 12 to 18 years old. The project began in 2009 and has reached Alpha 6 version release.
Description
[edit]The developers claim[2], Open Studio uses SharpDevelop's Text Editor and Debugger while everything else is hand-rewritten. The docking system is the same as used by SharpDevelop. Open Studio is claimed to be highly extensible allowing developers to add different programming languages (with support for code folding, syntax highlighting, and visual designers) for each. One may add plug-ins to do numerous tasks. The IDE has a built-in HTML validator powered by W3C to aid web developers.
History
[edit]Open Studio[3] began on April 12, 2009 as a basic attempt to create an IDE for VB.NET and C#. Development was fast-paced during the first week, which included the first alpha release. It was basic in functionality and it was only able to compile "pre-written" source code files. Shortly afterward, it expanded to include the ability to edit HTML files, but that was left alone until alpha 5. Despite a lot of criticism from "more experienced" developers[4], the project continued bringing alphas 2-5. Alpha 6 makes the first release of the school year which was released on September 11, 2009. Open Studio is still in heavy development as of today.
