Golden Banana
[edit]Golden Banana is a term used by analysts when discussing [[metropolization in a European context. It denotes an area of higher population density along the Mediterranean coast, from northern Spain through the south of France to northern Italy. It extends from Barcelona to Genoa, though there is no agreement as to its extent. One source includes Madrid [], others take in Valencia,[] or Livorno,[] or even Montpelier and Lyons.[Lever & Bailly]
The "Golden Banana" is one of a number of spatial planning models used by the EU; others include the "Red Octopus", the "Blue Banana", the "North of the South", and the "European Mushroom". However this approach has been criticized by Kuntzmann, who points out that "as the variety of different spatial metaphors available suggests, these images are based less on empirical evidence than on creative geopolitical imaginations: almost any space in Europe can be depicted as a potentially important European urban space" (Kunzmann 1992, quoted in Taylor & Hoyler)
