How Social Media and Activism Work Together

[edit]

People have discovered new ways to communicate and collaborate through social media. Features such as feeds, profiles, and groups on social platforms provide global access to organizations that can promote and increase visibility by sharing and networking. Modern communication students study these virtual platforms and can even pursue careers creating and distributing digital content. The power of social media can amplify voices, instantaneously spread information and collaboration across diverse groups of people.https://cfaesdei.osu.edu/resources/digital-activism

Additionally, research indicates that social media also plays a critical role in mobilizing grassroots movements and political activism, offering marginalized groups a platform to organize and voice their concerns in ways that were previously unavailable (Howard & Hussain, 2013). Social media, through its vast reach and real-time communication capabilities, enables rapid coordination for social and political causes, demonstrating its transformative power in the digital age.

Digital activism has had a big impact on how people talk about race, gender, and society. People have used the internet to support social justice issues through movements like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo. When disadvantaged groups use digital tools to fight structural abuse and make real change, these efforts show how achievable it is (Gladwell, 2021).
