Part 1: Remarks

[edit]

Quotes

  • UNI[1]: "Some one asked me to do the abhishek of one small idol claiming it to be 'Nilkanthvarni,' but I said this is a false Nilkanth as the Nilkanth, the husband of Parvathi, is only one that is Lord Shiva, who drinks poison."
  • Indian Express[2]: "Morari Bapu, during one of his kathas (religious discourses) recently remarked that Lord Shiva was the only true Neelkanth and not “ones that had eaten laddus”.
  • BBC (translated)[3]: Morari Bapu told the stage while doing Rama Katha, "When it comes to Nilkanth Abhishek, open your ears and understand, Shiva is anointed. If someone anoint Nilkanth in their branches, then it is fake Nilkanth. He is Kailash. No. Who is Neelkanth, who has drunk poison, he is the one.
  • VTV (translated)[4]: In which Moraribapu said that the anointing of Nilakantha is the anointing of Shiva. If someone animates Neelkanth in his branch, then he is not Shiva a fake Neelkanth. Eucalyptus cataracts are erupting. The person who has poisoned it is called Nilakantha. Whoever eats lads does not have emeralds.
    • Title uses the word કટાક્ષ (sarcasm – see hereand here)

;Details to Incorporate

  1. Identify time (September 2019) and context ("in one of his discourses")
  2. Nilkanth is a name shared by both Shiva and Swaminarayan, not just a title, and Morari Bapu was referring to Swaminarayan.
  3. “Eating ladus” references a colonial-racist trope (metaphorical expression) that invokes the image of an indulgent, hypocritical fraud disguised as a Hindu ascetic or holy man and is meant to deride the authenticity of Swaminarayan's austerities.
  4. Followers responded to remarks, not the refusal to perform the ritual.
