HISTORY The Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University is the ninth state Faculty of Medicine. It was established as per the wishes of Professor Prapass Ouychai, the former Rector of Thammasat University in 1977. A proposal was then drafted which was driven into action by the next Rector Professor Nongyao Chaiseree. The University Council in its 8/1983 meeting agreed to endorse an academic policy to promote and provide support to scientific education & applied medicine with an aim to generate graduates in Medicine. The Thammasat Hospital was initially constructed by rector’s order no 747/1986 dated 25th September 1986. A Committee led by Professor Suthee Nartworathun as President and Mr. Pramual Sapawasu, the then Minister of Finance as honorary President helped to raise funds for the purpose from the University Alumni. The work picked up speed after the National Economic and Social Development Board agreed with the suggestion of the letter from the secretariat of the Cabinet dated 30th November 1986, as per the rector’s advice, to establish the Faculty one year after the hospital was operational. In 1988 ,the next Rector ,Professor Krerkkiat Phipatseritham ,working closely with the Ministry of Public Health produced the required number of graduates as per the policies of the Department of Education. The University Council endorsed the proposal for establishing the Faculty of Medicine in September 1988 and it was approved by the Cabinet on 30th January 1990. His Majesty signed the bill on 19th of March 1990, thus establishing the ninth state Faculty of Medicine. In the year 2000, the University Council under the President ship of Professor Nongyao Chaiseree endorsed Thammasat Hospital to be an independent Faculty of Medicine and have autonomous administration under the Office of the President to better serve its goals, mission and strategies. Department of Sciences – Applied Thai Traditional Medicine Secretariat faculty Office looks after the units of Human Resource, General Administration, Finance & planning, Educational Technology, Educational Services, Student Affairs & Health Promotion, Research, Knowledge Management and Graduate Studies Program. Department of Preclinical Sciences looks after the units of Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology & Immunology, Parasitology, Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics & Molecular Biology. Department of Clinical Sciences looks after the units of Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Otolaryngology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Obstetrics &Gynecology, Pathology & Forensic, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology and Radiology. Department of Community Medicine and family Medicine looks after the units of Community Medicine, Family Medicine and Educational Technology Applied Thai traditional Medicine is looked after by the Department of Sciences.

THE STUDY OF MEDICINE -At Thammasat University, Faculty of Medicine The Faculty of Medicine was established on the 19th of March 1990 as the eleventh faculty of the University and the ninth public medical school in Thailand. The curriculum has been designed to provide promising medical students not only with high quality medical knowledge and skill, but also to instruct them in community health science, medical social science, law and ethics. The university is the second in Thailand to introduce the concept of Problem based Learning and Community based learning .The Faculty’s new approach to medical education is aimed to create a curriculum that focuses equally on health and disease and on effective prevention in addition to treatment. Emphasis is also laid on other facets of medicine such as- research methodology, evidence based medicine, knowledge transfer, patient education, public awareness and public health administration. Thus the curriculum guides, stimulates and challenges a student, nurturing them into responsible and dedicated professional. Subjects included are basic science, social science, language and ethics. • Phase II( year 2&3): The integrated body system approach in year 2&3 focuses on normal and abnormal structure, function and behavior of basic medical science. • Phase III (year 4, 5&6): Phase III implements a task based approach. LIFE AT THAMMASAT UNIVERSITY: Accommodation is provided at the University village within the University campus. Thammasat- Rangsit offers a kind of luxury with fully equipped air-conditioned room along with Satellite TV for nearly 80% of the students. There is also a swimming pool and a movie theatre within the campus. Rates for accommodation ranges from 3000-6000 baht per calendar month per room to not more than 4 persons in one room.

Thammasat University Rangsit is in the province of Pathumthani which is located at the outskirt of Bangkok metropolitan area. There are a number of tourist destinations in and around Pathumthani. Shopping facilities are also good with “Future Park Rangsit” being one of the best known shopping and leisure complex in Thailand.

Sports and Leisure: Thammasat University at Rangsit campus was an official venue for 1999 Asian games. Sports facilities meet a very high standard with a 30,000 capacity stadium, Olympic standard swimming pool and three large air-conditioned indoor stadium. Two 18-holes golf courses are also located in close proximity to the faculty.

Social and Cultural education are important aspects for all round development of an individual. Various fun filled activities and events are organized by all the year round to bring out the best in every student. Notable among them are events organized by the Musical society, Thai Musical Society, Photography and Travel Society, The Academic Society and the Community Service society.

Map and travel information: By plane: The Faculty of Medicine Thammasat University at Rangsit campus is only 16 kilometer (10miles) north of Don Muang international airport. A taxi from the airport will take about 20 minutes and cost about 250 Thai baht. By Road: The Medical faculty is located next to the Paholyothin Road which runs from Bangkok metropolitan area towards Pranokornsri Ayutthaya. Regular air-conditioned public transport to the faculty from Rangsit is available on buses numbered 29, 39, 510 and mini buses/vans. Private cars can reach the faculty by taking a northbound expressway and exiting at one of the Thammasat exits.
