I'm a retired university professor (Department of Biology, University of Michigan) whose research was in the area of the biochemistry of insect-plant and insect-microbial interactions. When I retired, I turned in my grades and the key to my lab, and started a new life. I've always been interested in military history, especially organizational history (the Jefferson-Federalist debates over the role a professional vis-a-vis a citizen army), and America's 18th and 19th century wars.
During two visits to the Center of Military History, I poured through about a thousand folders of documents concerning existing National Guard units, and am now pretty confident I have identified all of the units with origins that date back to 1900 or earlier (and made copies of their Lineage and Honors Certificates).
Future Wikipedia articles will include "Regular Army units with Campaign Credit for the War of 1812," "Army units with colonial origins," "National Guard units with Gettysburg Campaign credit" and "Regular Army units with Gettysburg Campaign credit."
