SURGE is a Tactical role-playing game created by Mark Leaman which was published first as a card game called Supersurge in 1995 and then as the SURGE pen and paper role-playing game in 1996 by Merrymeeting Games. The SURGE: RPG SYSTEM was released and distributed through Herozine at Gen Con '96 at MECCA, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The setting and timeline of the takes place in the near future on a post-apocalyptic Earth and draws heavily on mythological and historical events of that are reinterpreted to provide a background of ancient alien high-technology. Unlike most role-playing games the system encourages both individual and team play by pitting player against player using conflicting mission goals in a series of episodic adventures.
The system is based upon four high concept attributes (Might, Willpower, Prowess, Toughness) which flavor special abilities of a player's character or team leader. A player may construct an individual high-power character or a team of lesser powered characters ranging in size from 2 to 8 characters. The game makes use of a segmented turn sequence that allows characters to see intent before committing to a specific action or attack during combat.
The SURGE SYSTEM is a core ruleset of game mechanics that are used in SURGE as well other games made by Merrymeeting Games such as Endzone.
